Arts and Sciences

One of the first things our newcomers notice is the fighting: Armored combatants clashing, a herald crying out the winners, banners flying over a beautifully clad crowd of spectators… Where did the armor come from? Whence the banners? Who made the clothes those spectators wear?

Through the Arts and Sciences (A&S), we strive to recreate the Middle Ages. Some of this is visual: the clothes that help create the atmosphere, the armor that makes the fighting possible, the food we will eat at the feast, the harp that the minstrel is playing. Other portions are intellectual: the discipline and restraint of the fighters, the costumer learning not only the technique of sewing but the medieval clothes-sense as well, the minstrel learning a new aesthetic. These are the domain of the Arts and Sciences.

Weekly A&S

For the past six years, many of us have taken advantage of the Tuesday night Arts and Sciences nights held at Dragon Castle (the home of Lady Gina Dragoni and Lord Richard of Dragon Castle) in Kanata. Alas, due to waining attendance, Lady Gina and Lord Richard have sadly decided that the Tuesday night west end A&S night will come to and end.

Thank you to Lady Gina and Lord Richard for their hospitality over the years.

A&S Gatherings

We also frequently host Canton A&S/social Gatherings (normally on the third and fifth Sundays of the month); we teach and discuss and engage in various Arts and Sciences either members of the Canton or kind gentles from our sister Cantons care to present that day.

Below are some of the projects that the Canton has completed through these A&S Gatherings. On our main page as well as our Canton calendar, you’ll find a schedule of the upcoming Gatherings… these are open to any gentle who wishes to come out, so please come and out and enjoy with us!
