About Harrowgate Heath

W

elcome to the Canton of Harrowgate Heath, a humble community of individuals from eastern Ontario who gather regularly to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Europe’s Middle Ages. We are a volunteer based organization and our members play in the SCA because it is our hobby, and it’s fun!

In the modern world, the Canton is seated in Winchester, Ontario and covers a region that used to be the old counties of Grenville and Dundas. Harrowgate Heath has also been tasked with expanding activities in the lands to the east stretching to the Quebec border, including the city of Cornwall. Our closest neighbouring cantons are in Ottawa, Kingston, Petawawa, and in the south, Potsdam, New York.

We are a local chapter in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), an international society celebrating the life of medieval Europe between 600 A.D. and about 1600 A.D. The SCA is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to researching and recreating the arts, skills and chivalry from life in pre-17th century Europe. It currently operates in 22 countries around the world, with an estimated registered membership of over 30,000 members.

We, along with our neighbouring Cantons, are a part of the Barony of Skraeling Althing (Eastern Ontario). The Barony in turn belongs to the Kingdom of Ealdormere (Ontario). Kingdoms are the largest regional division in the SCA; there are 19 Kingdoms throughout the world.

The group that eventually became the Canton of Harrowgate Heath was founded in 2004. We adopted our current name when we gained our full chapter status in January 2007. Our name, Harrowgate Heath, is Old English from the words “Harwegate” and “Heath” meaning "road to the heap of stones in the wasteland". “Canton” is an in-period way of saying town or village.

Please note: You do not need to be a paid member of the SCA, Inc. to enjoy being a citizen of Harrowgate Heath or to attend events and participate in activities. However, paid members of the Society do enjoy certain benefits.

If you are new to the SCA and want to know more about what this is all about, visit our Newcomers page.
